Amidst unrevealed tax returns, deleted emails and hidden agendas of this day, cynicism beckons. It woos to rule our choices, govern our emotions and direct our attention. And if we’re not careful, we will fall prey.
We can’t escape the constant chatter over the 2016 US Presidential election. We hear it at work, on TV and from friends and family. The incessant media dialogue promotes an around-the-clock doomsday fear. It’s a vortex not easily escaped.
If you ever wonder how many ways in which a talking point can be spun, please turn on the news. And it’s astounding how reporters can give an account for the 298th time as if it was their first telling.
In my experience with the election, I’ve noticed two emotional extremes, both of which, sadly, I’ve demonstrated at times.
The Band Wagoner – For some, the beating of a dead horse via accounts and recounts incites stand taking and stake claiming. Appetites develop for the next scandal, riot or gaffe, and it becomes more and more difficult to satisfy the addiction. The principle of the matter assumes precedence in the heart.
The Ostrich – On the other hand, the media’s fear-mongering can send us plunging head-first into the sand – out of sight, out of mind, right? Yet indifference, or the state of being lukewarm, is a dangerous place to be in our faith (Revelations 3:15-16 NIV).
ISIS AND TAXES AND AIRS, OH MY!
In both cases, circumstances are driving motives and decisions. I do believe there are many concerns that, based on the outcome of the race, could have great bearing on major issues such as sanctity of life and marriage, foreign relations, national security, the economy and social issues.
But I’ve learned that whatever we place first in our lives, whatever takes center stage, becomes our primary focus. So the question is, what do I choose as my primary focus?
By sensationalizing the idea of the first woman president, many in this nation are turning a blind eye to the increasing moral decay that’s sure to ensue her inauguration. She touts freedom and prosperity for the masses, yet the resulting oppression would be much like that of the Wicked Witch of the East. Only the Lord knows her heart and can say if a flying house (or the Congressional one) would be her demise.
Never would I have dreamed that option two for this great nation would be a man who denigrates women, grossly misuses his financial successes and reeks of the most offensive pride. Yet we know that if he becomes the 45th President of the United States, the smoke and mirrors will fade and the curtain will open to reveal the Wizard’s secrets in time.
There’s much hanging in the balance concerning life as we know it, and there seems to be no happy medium in sight. I believe that’s by our Creator’s design. He never meant for us to settle in the middle without a sound mind and courageous heart.
The yellow brick road may seem overgrown and difficulty to navigate. But if we consult with the Travel Guide, we’ll find that the safety of home is closer than we think:
“…He has also set eternity in the human heart…” (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV).
TRUTH TRUMPS BALANCE
Balance won’t – no, can’t – inoculate us from these emotional extremes. To be a little less adamant or a little more participative does not move the needle on our faith gauge. This calls for a refuge of strength, albeit not the protection from those on our bandwagon, dwellers of the sandpit in which we stick our heads or even those whose names are written on the voting ballot. If ever this nation needed a dose of spoken Truth, it’s now! Here’s the truth: If Hillary is elected in November, the King still reigns. If Donald wins the vote, our God is still sovereign. Whoever assumes the title of President of the United States of America will do so according to the Lord’s will:
“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God” (Romans 13:1 NIV).
COME OUT, COME OUT, WHEREVER YOU ARE
Do you believe and receive the peace that comes from the Good Word’s truths? Can you rest now knowing that your Creator “commands His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways”?
Yes? Then I encourage you to be a truth teller. Bring peace to the heart of the Band Wagoner. Draw out the Ostrich with words of wisdom and hope. I’m not political and would have little ground on which to stand during a debate. But I do stand on the side of a Mighty God who holds us together, who is always for us and has built our house on The Rock!
So, will you be a truth teller today?
